| - MLK Day, 2018. Despite the fact that there were already three inches of snow on the ground and more snow was steadily falling, my friend and I were determined to go to happy hour after work. So we took an Uber to Tavernakaya, which had a happy hour we had previously really enjoyed. After a near hazardous Uber ride in snowy conditions, we got out of the car and trudged through thick snow on the sidewalk, eager to warm ourselves up with some sake and pork buns. To our utter dismay, Tavernakaya was closed. Our fault for not checking before since it was a holiday but we were still distraught.
"There's a bar," I said, pointing straight to the Tipsy Cow. I'd been there once before for fries and beer and liked it enough that I started trudging toward it right away. My co-worker and I settled in at the bar and both ordered a bourbon peach mule. It was happy hour so specialty cocktails were $2 off, beer was $1 off, and wine was $5 a glass. We were safe. We had made it. The bourbon peach mule was delicious -- the peach adding just the right note of freshness and the bourbon was strong enough that you could taste but not so strong that it overpowered the delicate peach and ginger beer flavors. It was, in short, just what we needed on a Monday where it seemed nothing was going our way. We were a bit hungry so we decided to order some wings and fries - both half off during happy hour, making an order of 6 wings only $3 and a large order of fries only $2. I ordered the honey harissa wings and my coworker had the parmesan peppercorn. Both were great -- lots of meat, my wings had a smokey yet sweet flavor, and the parmesan peppercorn ones were crispy and flavorful. The fries were crunchy, and the cheese sauce that accompanied them was dairy perfection. Our bartender was friendly and attentive, serving us waters before we asked, refilling waters before we asked, and being prompt with splitting checks and making change.
Thank God we live in Madison, home of so many bars that even if one is closed, there's another one right down the street. And thank God for the Tipsy Cow for strong drinks, good wings, and a cozy bar to hole up in during a snow storm.
