| - Let me start off by saying I've been to the Salon four times before writing this review. I've had Nikki the first three times, and Soo-Ran the fourth time only because I've been pressed for time and Nikki was unavailable.
Nikki is meticulous and detailed, as some of the other reviewers note here. Soo-Ran is not so much, but she is very good with listening to what look you're going for, and giving her opinions on whether it would work or not, and giving very helpful suggestions. Nikki knows how to take care of my hair a little better, adding products exactly where it's needed, where as Soo-Ran mentioned my hair is a bit dry but did nothing to address this issue. Between the two, it's very hard to decide who I like better! You probably can't go wrong with either. In terms of the stylists' skills, I would give this place a 5 star.
Now I'll explain why I took a star away... I started going to Salon years ago, when they had a few things that made them above and beyond other places.
- They offered the option of free tea or a better drink for $2. They also offered to refill my free tea during the session! Although I never took their offer, it was still nice.
- The assistants were very nice (they still are!) and gentle with their services (washing your hair, massaging your scalp), I even tipped them on top of the tip I gave to the stylist, to let them know.
- On TIME to take you in, give or take 5-10 minutes.
- They offered 20% off if you refer a friend. (I never managed to use it before they stopped it.)
The last two times I've been there, I feel they've actually gone downhill when it came to these points.
- The last time I went, I didn't realise they started charging $2 on all beverage, so when I asked for my usual beverage, I ended up being charged. That was my fault, they changed their menu and I vaguely remember seeing $2 largely on their beverage menu but I just assumed my usual drink was free.
- The assistants are still nice but I don't see the same ones I've seen in the past. (Which is probably a good sign, because who wants to be an assistant for life?) I might have unfortunately been served by a new hire, but I didn't feel the assistant was trained in the same way... a bit disappointing.
- During the last two visits, my appointments didn't start until 30-50 minutes later than booked. Then I was rushed through the end of my appointment because of course the next appointment was waiting too.
- The 20% discount was discontinued but I wasn't aware. This is a bonus anyway but when I finally did refer someone here, I didn't get a chance to use it. Oh well.
Overall I would come back because I love the stylists. However, I use to think Salon was above and beyond all the other places I've been to and now I think it's just slightly above average. You can't beat the price though, when you look at the skills of the stylists. But hey, as long as I leave with great hair, that's the whole point right? :-)
