  • Chronic over-tipper here, I start at 20%. Last night I gave my first low tip in over five years. It was $1.06 on $25.94 bill. I wrote a note on the bill explaining my choice. When we walked out she was near the exit and said to me "oops" somewhat sarcastically. Thanks Debbie. It's a comedy club with a two drink minimum. Of course we went there knowing we're spending money. We got there on time but the club started the show over 30 minutes late, and during this wait time they played music so loud that the only choice was to yell as loud as possible, which still didn't work. Sure they want to sell drinks and get people comfortable, but how can I order drinks under such circumstances? So our server starts off by telling us two drink specials, which were both about $12 each, but couldn't be bothered to know the beer list, nor did the place have a printed one. My date and I each pick a lackluster choice out of the eight or so she could remember. Later when I ask for a second beer and water with lemon, she asks if I "just want a bottled water for the taste you know" and I say no, just a water with lemon. She brings just a water, with a black floaty. No lemon, no beer. I decide to not push the lemon issue as screaming over comics to order can be seen as heckling, but I point to my empty beer, and she's said "oh I didn't hear you." And goes to get me another lame-duck beer. Then I notice that the table next to us is getting a round of one of my favorite beers, which was never mentioned by our server. I'm officially completely annoyed, and ask for the check. Turns out I have the cash to leave said $1.04 tip or have her get me change. To make matters worse, we were "checked" as we left early. A guy in a suit asked to see our dinner check to ensure we each got two drinks. I explained that I left it with our server, who was terrible. He said he needed to see the check or speak with our server. They convene then my date and I are free to go, with neither addressing the "terrible" service. We've been on three other dinner dates this past week with a guest check of $60-$80 each and all of those servers made more than 20% ..Debbie the server should look for a different job, or study the menu at her current job. And drop the attitude.
