We should have gone else where. I was telling myself the entire time before setting up the reservation "Why would you ever go to a sushi joint or restaurant that is so far inland and so far away from the ocean?". I should have stuck to my first though and gone anywhere else.
We decided to get the Futari Omakase which runs $80 per person. This is the run down on the food:
1) Cucumber Sunomono (AMUSE) - ya... the Japanese cucumbers covered in MSG is actually a dish and not just given to you like you would get artisan bread at an Italian place.
2) Yellowtail Sashimi and a King, Snow and Dungeness Crab Salad - The sashimi was about average. It is comparable to something you can get at your average sushi joint around your home. They butchered the yellowtail. The salad was average.
3) Shibaki Tuna Tartare and the Toban Spiced Albacore- On the albacore they put these... what I can only describe and probably is French's Onion all over the albacore. Although it was decent... there is probably a sushi chef rolling around in his grave. The tartare was bleh.
4) Lobster and Scallop - this was actually very good and was probably the highlight of the meal
5) Miso Soup - the Miso Soup was so awkwardly placed in the meal that I was actually getting sick from it. At this point in the meal we had gone through a couple of bottles of cold sake. Then they introduced this hot miso soup... it did not sit well with me the hot and cold liquid. Ewwwww. I felt like sh*t after this. Normally miso soup is one of, if not, the first things you get and not the last courses in the meal. Someone forgot to tell them that.
6) Nigiri - Average.... same this as the sashimi. average at best.
7) Dessert Trio (Yuzu Momo Parfait, Choco-Lychee Mousse, Mochi Ice Cream) - by this time I was feeling sick from the cold sake and the hot miso soup. I tried each of the desserts, but didn't care for them. I just needed to sit for a bit.
Overall, this was a horrible experience. We easily dropped a few Benjamins on the meal and sake only to feel kind of sick after all was said and done. I wish I had gone anywhere else that night. No single dish was bad (most were average or better), but it just goes to show you that the intangible things like course order can totally screw up the experience.
