| - I had purchased a Living Social deal for this place back in November and then kind of forgot about it. But with Valentine's Day right around the corner I figured this would make for a nice dessert to end the night.
On Monday I headed down to Just Baked following the directions via Google Maps. Unfortunately, the bakery had moved, but the new address was not present on Google Maps, Yelp or the Living Social page. So I stopped into a local antique shop and got directions to the new place, which is now behind CVS and pretty much next to the comic book shop (I'll update the address here on Yelp after posting this.)
From the inside, Just Baked has the appearance of a casual coffee house meets Cracker Barrel. There is a ton of open space for customers to sit back and enjoy their coffee and sweets, along with some rocking chairs and an oversize checkers set. The employee behind the counter was anything but sweet and was a pretty cold and unfriendly dude. I think his demeanor may have had to do with the Living Social coupon I held in my hand, as if he judged me for having a "deal" of sorts. I ordered three cupcakes with my $8 deal but have no idea how much they cost. He neither let me know how much of a balance I had (I would have purchased something else and then paid the little bit of cash to make up the rest) or offered me a receipt. When I got home I went on the website and saw that it was $2.50 a cupcake.
So the service was lame, but that's something I could deal with for heavenly cupcakes. But alas, the cupcakes were nothing special at home, and truth be told, were something my wife could have baked herself. While they did look pretty and fancy, they are small, and the cake sticks to the wrappers easily. I had picked out the dark chocolate raspberry fudge, pink champagne and strawberries & cream. The best one was the dark chocolate raspberry as it had an overly chocolate taste in the cake, and the chocolate fondant on top was good. The chocolate was a bit too chocolately though, as it over-powered the raspberry to the point where it was barely noticeable. The pink champagne cupcake was very weird in that it was virtually tasteless. As we ate it we both struggled to place the taste we had in our mouths, and the best I could say was "sweet." It simply tasted like sweet sugar...even the yellow cake bottom had no flavor to it. It was a very strange cupcake indeed. The strawberries and cream cupcake was supposed to have cream cheese frosting, but that definitely didn't happen. The frosting was just plain ol' strawberry flavored frosting with a strawberry on top, which led to a pretty plain ol' cupcake.
It's a shame to see a place that specializes in cupcakes makes such a mediocre product. Mind you, the dark chocolate and the strawberry cupcakes weren't horrible, but simply tasted like something that could have been made in anyone's kitchen. The size and quality of the cupcakes are not worth the $2.50 price tag. The lame service on top of the average cupcakes contributes to the fact that I am in absolutely no rush to go back. If you need some fancy-looking sweets on the fly and simply don't have time to make it yourself at home, then I would recommend picking up some cupcakes here. At least it will be easy to pass them off as your own homemade item when you bring them to a friend's house.
