| - Im glad I got to experience Gordon Ramsay Steak. I dont know what happened the night I went with my group of friends, but most of us were pretty unhappy with the entire ordeal.
When we arrived, we got seated right away for our reservation. We got offered "bottle or sparkling water". What a trick, cant believe we fell for it. I guess it was our own bad to not notice until a few bottles ($45) in. Then, it took a while for our waiter to come with menus. When he came, he only gave us the drink iPad and the Hells Kitchen tasting menu. Apparently, they try to sell you that first before giving you a regular menu. After the regular menu came, we got to see the meat cart. The meat cart was a nice touch and it really helped some of us make our decisions. So far, the 2 rounds of menus and ordering took around 45 minutes. Just give us all the menus please.
We started out with a bread platter that was overall pretty pleasing. Not the best I have had, but it had a great variety and the butter/salt was good.
When the appetizers arrived, they were generally well received. The caesar salad was very underwhelming but the tuna tartare and asparagus soup got rave reviews. The foie gras dish was sadly slightly overcooked. Meh, it was foie gras and tasted good anyways, especially since its banned in California again.
The main courses were the biggest let down of all. The steaks here are the type that have a crust of char on top, so it gives off a very strong char flavor. If you like this kind of steak, you will probably enjoy GRS. Everyone who ordered a steak said that it tasted 1 note and "the same" throughout, and most struggled to finish it. Worst of all, the steaks were NOT cooked to temperature. The med-rare that my friend ordered was almost blue-rare and another friend had a medium that was bordering on medium-well. Both ribeyes were chewy. The porterhouse was also very one note. The signature beef wellington was more acceptable because of the delicious pastry. The meat inside was also excessively chewy. The dish was also hard to cut. GSR NEEDS TO GIVE PROPER STEAK KNIVES. The knives were not sharp enough to cut their tough steaks easily.
The few of us who ordered seafood... it was just ok. Cooked properly, but no wow factor. Salmon would have been slightly overcooked for my tastes, but overall it is pretty neutrally seasoned food. I guess if you come to a steakhouse not wanting to eat steak, thats what you get.
The best dishes were the mushroom and corn side dishes. Creamed spinach and mac and cheese were forgettable.
Overall, this is a fun place to see if you are a fan of Hell's Kitchen or Gordon Ramsay (his photographs are everywhere). It was also nice to try his famous Beef Wellington. It is VERY expensive (at least 100pp before alcohol) for a meal, and does not live up to the hype. Would not return or recommend.
