| - We played the Priceline hotel lottery game and got the Sutton Place hotel. It's billed as a four star hotel and while the hotel is not the grande dame it used to be -- it comes pretty close. The hotel is elegantly old fashioned with marble entry, funky gold mosaic, and most importantly immaculately clean.
We stayed for four days in July and were pleasantly surprised by the room and the bathroom. We were all smiles and high fives in the afternoon, but come nightfall the incredibly loud and ineffectual air-conditioning fan, as well as the rock-hard bed turned our smiles into frowns. By the second night we figured out that there was cold air coming out of the vent, it was just all being swallowed by up the curtains. My brilliant husband was able to rig a contraption made from a tray and a hanger so that the air was deflected into the room and things were much better after that... I only wish he had been able to MacGyver the bed to make it more comfortable.
On the positive side, throughout our stay the room was kept immaculately, the bathroom was always cleaned and resupplied with fresh towels and toiletries. The pillows were soft and comfortable, even if the bed wasn't. For those with an eco-bent -- a nice touch was the recycling bin and the option to opt out of fresh linens. We never had a problem with sound filtering from other rooms and the shower pressure was good as well as temperature.
The concierges at this place rock! Make sure to take full advantage of the knowledge they have which is quite extensive. They scored us great cheap tickets to Billy Elliot and extremely hard to get reservations at the Corner House for Summerlicious.
The pros: the location of the hotel is hard to beat, just a half a block away from the subway. The neighborhood is full of great places to eat with selections from sushi to afghani, cheap eats and some posher establishments. The hotel does change currency without any fees which was very helpful.
On the negative side: the hotel charges for wifi, parking is expensive and the front desk is pretty unresponsive when called on the phone. If you have any kind of problems it behooves you to go see them in person. They aren't very friendly but they do get things done once you have their attention.
Overall I would recommend the Sutton Place to my friends, based on the location, cleanliness, concierges and price.
