I took my 2008 Subaru Legacy in for an oil change and tire rotation. I had bought my car out of state and this was my first experience with this dealership. The repair staff came out and told me the head gasket was leaking. They quoted $3700-$4000 for repair. I was shocked and called the local dealership where I had bought the car. They told me a head gasket repair would be $1900-$2500 at their shop. I then took the car to an independent shop and they didn't find a problem with the gasket. In fact, they said visualization of a head gasket problem is next to impossible. They said they could perform a test for $100, but didn't feel it was necessary. Imagine not trying to sell me a service! They also found oil on the passenger side that looked like it was from the oil change the day before. So...IF I need a new head gasket, the dealership is grossly overcharging and at a minimum they perform messy oil changes which I will pay $66 to the independent shop to steam clean.
