Last night February 10, 2017, I was visiting the Westin Harbour Castle with my sister room 816 South Tower. At approximately 11:00 Two Security officials came to the room to say that we were making too much noise and threatened if they come back at another time they will impose a $400 fine if we do not keep it down. This seemed unreal as that we were having normal-volumed conversation on a Friday night and about to leave the hotel in a matter of a half hour.
I found this appalling and tried to get in touch with the head of the hotel via phone from the room and got re-directed three times! I then went downstairs to talk to a manager and was directed to talk to "Jessica". I asked "Jessica" what is considered loud for them to call security on people who are having a simple human to human conversation, she then preceded to tell me that someone called to complain that it was too loud when people are just talking. There was absolutely no music, it was just people talking in the room.
"Jessica" did not answer any questions, I told her that it seemed that the security team personally attacked our room because at the time there was a loud room outside of 816 down the hallway and it was LOUD and the security team did not come up to say anything to them. I told, "Jessica" that it seemed like a racist practice that they target only coloured people when it comes to what the Westin perceives as "loud" and when I asked about the $400 fine about what is percieved as loud "Jessica" said they do not impose fines such as that. There was a witness with me to attest to that statement. I preceded back to 816.
Then another knock on the door and the same two security people who came said the same thing again and said they were going to charge the room a $400 fine again! So I told them that clearly there is a miscommunication as before I went to talk to "Jessica" and she clarified that this $400 fine is made up! The Security lady "Mai" then said to me " I can smell Marijuana in your room." It was at this point I knew the room was being targeted. 1. I have never smoked marijuana in my life. 2. This inherently racist comment is something that "Mai" said to attack my personal character. I am A Canadian Citizen who is educated with a Masters degree and she is insinuating that the people in the room are smoking marijuana? I called "Mai" and her partner "Andrew" racist. She asked me to leave, our group told her we had to wait for our uber/taxi and she agreed it was fine that we waited in the the ROOM. Two minutes later she knocks again and immediately tells us to leave. "Mai" and her partner then follows our group in the hallway arguing with us saying that she is not racist. I asked her what she knew about anti-black racism and she told me "You're not even black". This distasteful comment goes to show that clearly, your employees have no regard for respect and dignity. Does "Mai" know if I identify with Black? Why would she speak to anyone like that? Did she not have any proper training for the job? It clearly shows your staff cannot rectify any situation without throwing racist remarks around. She then follows us in the elevator with her partner and tells the cardholder of the room that she will be charging $400 to the room because she was called racist. She is basing her opinion off of how she was called racist. That is the business that the Westin conducts?! "Jessica was downstairs and she said that she explained a "tranquility agreement" to me initially when I went downstairs. That was a complete and utter lie and she could not respond when I had confronted her about it. "Jessica" then said that our group was "throwing around harsh accusations" about the Westin using racist practices.
