| - This is one of those places that I go back to in my memory and is, honestly, one of the things I miss about the Midwest. My Champaign trips were always enjoyable, but I think this place is really indicative of the true vibe and attitude in that town.
On my first visit, it was a rainy day. I had a late lunch and was just sitting afterward, working on the laptop, when they started cleaning up and most people started leaving. I asked one of the staff what time they closed, and he responded "We're a church, so we don't close."
And that's the thing: they are a church, but they don't push Jesus in your face in their basement restaurant. They're just serving the local community. Providing a warm and welcoming space, with warm and hearty meals, free of pretenses. I mean, this is not the best food you'll ever eat and this is not the best restaurant in the city. But they do well with what they have, I think, and I really appreciate what they're doing. I hope that this place sticks around for a while.
