I bought an American West home in 1997 in El Capitan Ranch. I've lived here going on 20 years. My complaints aren't as much about their shady sales tactics which is no secret, as they are about their poor building quality. Every home in my division has eventually had problems with their roofs leaking. I'm talking about the flat roofs with the air conditioning units mounted on them. This will take approximately 14 to 16 years to show up. Repair $1400. I have finally fixed that problem only to find out that my fireplace is now leaking in the rear of the house. Repair $1200. This builder, to save a few dollars used 10 or 15 year flashing under the stucco instead of 50 year (lifetime). I now dread every time it rains. The problems I have had with this house have been never ending with all the shortcuts the contractors took when building these homes. I would strongly urge anyone thinking of purchasing an American West home to look elsewhere as their building quality is poor. You will be heading for an onslaught of problems that you will regret. I am currently selling my house, and after it is sold I will elaborate with a lot more details and photos about the laundry list of problems I have endured during my 20 years of ownership with very little joy. I pray that someday the thousands of homeowners with leaking roofs, windows, fireplaces and shoddy construction will head up a class-action lawsuit against them.
