| - One of my favorite things about First Friday is that it is a Las Vegas event that promotes walking around, and when you are walking around with a bunch of people, you just feel like you are part of a community. First Friday is a grassroots event started by local artists and art supporters to bring attention to local art and galleries. All of the Arts District galleries plus some others are open, and there is food, music, art and people strolling. For me, it is as much about the feeling of community as it is about looking at the art with a super critical eye. We need more monthly gatherings like this!
Here is my March First Friday breakdown:
The super loud techno music outside of Place on Main was mildly disturbing, but definitely provocative, and then there was the guy who showed up with a snake around his neck causing my gal pal to literally throw herself into the middle of the road. Still, all of that was an experience and a story to share. I love story moments.
Alios is a lighting consultancy by day, cool in and of itself, but the owner Todd was hosting a design show featuring work by some of the very talented designers who have been laid off in Las Vegas. Furniture and lighting were the big features, and it made me proud of Las Vegas creatives, as the work was snappy. Afterall, there are some big creative brains behind the design of the casinos. Just take a moment to look around before you drop your chips on the table.
Space on Charleston was opening a show about love: lovely. Actually, my favorite things there were the leather creations created by one of the artists featured in the show. Drats, I can't find her card. Must be in my other jeans!
Stopped by Bret Wesley too. I love this space! The current show features some paintings of the Neon Boneyard, so I have to be a fan by default, as I am a tour guide at the Boneyard.
It is also worthwhile to stop by the Arts Factory. They had a live jazz band in the parking lot this past Friday, and inside you can visit several galleries and the Contemporary Art Center.
Lastly, all of the vintage home good stores are open as well, so if you need some mid-century duds for your home, you can start your shopping in a rather merry atmosphere.
Okay, so I lied: LASTLY, there are after parties at all of your favorite downtown joints (Beauty Bar, Downtown Cocktail Room, Frankie's, etc.) to revel in what a delightful evening you just experienced.
To help with parking, there are shuttles that run from the FREE Government Center parking lot and from the FREE El Cortez parking deck, so no "There's no place to park" excuse.
Grassroots arts, design, furniture sprinkled with music, randomness and splendid company is a winning concoction to me. And, the beauty is the more people that come, the better the event becomes as strolling supports a multitude of festive feet!
