| - I was telling a friend the other day that if I was on Yelp when I was 2-3 years old, I would have checked in here at least 3000 times by now. This is one of the ultimate nostalgia locations in my memory as my Dad and I used to come here for Haircuts and Ice Cream about twice a month when I was very young. The plaza has seen a ton of changes over the years and the latest comes in the dawn of the light rail era. Brace yourselves, University neighbors, the wild and crazy folks from South end are coming to check us out!
Conveniently located adjacent to the JM Keynes Lynx Station, now easier than ever to shop here. The shops and restaurants within eyeshot of Tryon Street are all fairly new and have a young, trendy vibe to them, think fast-casual. City BBQ and CAVA have become staples in my house and Blaze Pizza is a good way to let everyone get their own style of pizza on the cheap. Dunkin Donuts and McD's are nearby for the super-fast 'I need calories and sugar' kind of mornings.
As you delve farther into the shopping center the dining options get more "sit and relax for awhile." Zapata's Mexican, Ciro's Italian, House of Leng, Famous Toastery, and Boardwalk Billy's all come to mind. These are all solid choices for a quick or impromptu dinner with friends or family.
Looking for shopping: Uptown cheapskate has tons of 'fashionable' lightly used clothes and you can take your stuff there for cash. There's a game stop adjacent to the boardwalk and Barber shop nearby. More home-essential shopping is found on the side closer to I-85 with Sam's Club, Conn's homegoods, Michael's, and Office Depot.
The boardwalk is a fun loop to unwind on. Most people stick to the Hilton Hotel side but if you walk around the side closer to Boardwalk Billy's then you'll really get the blood pumping. There's a small playground for the youngin's and a pier-like bridge that connects both sides. I however would suggest walking around the perimeter instead of the bridge as even the slightest breeze will cause the large fountain to spray you with pond water. A quick count of all the geese will clue you in on why this wouldn't be ideal!
Very family friendly and still a very popular destination for old and young alike. As someone who's seen a thing or two in this neighborhood, I'm really happy with the renovations that they've made and glad they're staying with the times.
