| - Due to a combination of both it being my first time travelling for work and me just being the utter most forgetful person ever, promptly after dining at this fine establishment, I forgot my receipt at the table. This was also after being THOSE patrons who ask for separate (from each other, and separate tabs for food and alcohol) AND itemized checks. Hate on me now, I deserve it. I intended to eat the cost of my meal and forget trying to get reimbursed for it, but figured it would be worth a shot to give the restaurant a call and see if they'd email me my receipt. They couldn't, but what they could do is mail a copy of my receipt to my home address (!!!!)
Long story short, I returned home a week later but didn't expect much. But lo and behold, to my surprise was an envelope from Tornado Steak House. My receipt, and even a postcard! Sweeeeeet. My impression of this place from our dining experience was already great, but their phenomenal above and beyond service just makes this restaurant even more awesome!
Anywho, this was our first meal in Madison and we came based on a recommendation by a friend and we were absolutely starving. So we had no idea what to expect, and walked in sans reservations. Luckily we were early and were able to snag a table, but do make reservations if you plan on coming during the typical dinner rush because our section was packed by the time we left! The vibe of the restaurant is very classic steakhouse, dimly lit and a little romantic with illuminated (real!) candles at each table. Service was spectacular and so accommodating from beginning to end, even though like I mentioned, we were literally the most annoying guests ever with our multiple check requests. (Sorry!)
I totally skipped getting any other appetizers and promptly told the waiter I'd have the 16 oz New York Strip. Good thinking, since all the steaks DO come with a salad (or a soup, I think) as well as your choice of a side! I think for ~$30 and some change, this is a great value since some places will charge you that much or even more for just an ala carte steak! The salad was pretty standard, but nice, crisp and fresh. There are a nice handful of options for sides you might find at any typical steakhouse (potatoes and the like) but I made an oops by choosing the roasted veggies, because apparently my tastebuds hate endives. The roasted veggies do change seasonally, so I'll make a note to skip endive season in the future. The star of the show of course was the steak, which was of gargantuan proportions. As much as I tried, I wasn't even able to tackle half of that thing! Really delicious though, and cooked to medium rare perfection, as I requested.
The veggie appetizer you're presented with upon sitting down is pretty cool, although we had no idea WTF it was at first. And they have a nice variety of house breads too, but I'd say skip the bread and save the stomach real estate for your entrée, you'll need it!
