Buying a car is a very stressful situation for most people. This one was even more stressful as we were replacing my daughter's car that was totaled when someone crashed into her. We had identified a used car online that seemed to be a good deal and went in to see it. The process of looking at and driving the car was pleasant enough. As it was used Honda and not a Hyundai, the salesman did not know much about it but we were fine doing our own research online.
It was during the purchase process that things turned sour and reminded me of why I dislike car shopping so much! The salesman sat down with a credit application. I had already told him we were paying cash. I googled why a dealer would have me fill out a credit app when paying cash and found several articles about scams regarding credit checks. It detailed how shady sales people will say it is required, use the patriot act and IRS as reasons. This guy did all of these as if reading a script!!!!
I asked him why he needed a credit application if I'm paying cash. He said it is easiest way to collect my info. He had pre-highlighted areas to fill out which included previous employers, monthly income, social security, etc. None of which is needed for a cash sale! I told him that I would happily provide necessary info but not on the credit application. He then said it was because I was paying by check over $10k. I told him that we could fill out the required IRS form for that. Then he said "it's for the patriot act, you know". I reminded him that for the Patriot Act he only needs to run my name and no additional information. He finally said "don't worry we will see if we can figure it out".
The article also detailed that many shady dealers will run an illegal credit check using the information on your license. After he gave up on the credit app, he came back and asked for my license. I told him once again that he did not have permission to run a credit check. He acknowledged that he would not. I'm planning on checking my credit history to ensure that they didn't.
But the point is that here I am a customer willing to pay cash for the car, no haggling, no issues and they turn what could be a pleasant experience into one that feels sketchy and shady. It's this kind of stuff that gives car sales people a bad name. It's unfortunate as my husband and I just returned from overseas and have to purchase two more cars in the next couple of weeks. I will NOT be purchasing them from any Earnhardt affiliated dealerships because of this experience.
