| - Short: Bad service, good food, great tempura.
Long: I'll just jump in with the food: Tempura was spot on. Not the best, but great with all the fixings. I haven't found better outside a festival. The soba was decent, and next time I'd ask for more wasabi. Prices, for $12 for soba and tempura, was alright. I don't feel ripped off, but I don't feel like I got a great deal as well.
The service, surprisingly for a Japanese restaurant, was some of the worse I've had. The waitress wasn't rude and she wasn't overwhelmed, but just super gloomy and disrespectful.
Here's what happened: Walked in and had to wait for her to pop out of the back to tell me to sit anywhere. She wasn't smiling, seemed more bored and annoyed than anything. I sat and waited... and waited for her to bring me a menu after passing me by for a while. I ordered water (because I like water) and looked through the menu. After I ordered, I waited... no water. The waitress was just hiding in the backroom the entire time. When she brought me my food, she brought me the water as well--lukewarm water in a tiny cup! What. The. Hell? I know people who order water seem cheap, but can't I get a normal glass and some ice? Other people, who got soda, got normal glasses and ice. Since I was thirsty I had to down the cup and I was never refilled--which is pretty bad when everything you're eating is salty.
Then, while I was half way through my meal, she came up while I was eating and asked me if I'd like to order anything else and HANDED ME THE BILL. What? Seriously, who trained her? You do not hand someone the bill while they are eating. You're telling them to eat and get out as fast as possible. I'm paying $12+ for a meal; I'm in no hurry to get out, and I didn't show any signs that I was in a hurry (because I wasn't). If she wasn't so gloomy, she might have ripped the food out from under me and pulled the money out of my wallet before shoving me out the door.
Again, the service wasn't horrible. I just don't want to go a restaurant to feel depressed and disrespected. The food and the environment was good, the waitress and the service I received was bad. I really do hope other people have experienced better service, or this was a one off thing. Still, there is no excuse for this.
Won't be coming here again.
