| - My review deals only with Suzy Shier store at Vaughan Mills Outlet Mall.
I found one sales associate very aggressive and unprofessional in selling me their prestige card; basically, a prestige card is something you can use only at Suzy Shier and it gives you 10% discounts on all your purchases (20% on the first time purchase). Rather than just letting me pay at the cashier counter, she kept on asking me to buy more stuff; and asking me for my email address; which are fine but then she added the prestige card to my bill without telling me how much the card cost.
First, she asked me if I wanted to buy any pairs of pants or skirts since they were 40% off today. I said no. Then, she asked me if I could give her my email address so I'd receive email when the store has 40% off sales. I said no. Instead of scanning my items, she proceeded to ask me if I wanted to get their prestige card. I said no. She kept on and added that I'd get 20% off on all of my purchases today and that the total would come to $X amount. So, I asked her "how much is the discount? and what is the cost of the card?" to which she responded, "oh it's only $2 more;" then she added the card to my bill. She was sneaky because it seemed like she was just checking the price of the card since I just asked her how much the card was. When I noticed that she added the card and told her I didn't want the card, she said she could not cancel it because apparently I was already registered in their system as their "beloved customer." I don't get how you cannot just cancel that.
Since it seemed like I was wasting my time because she wasn't going to cancel the card, repeatedly said "it's only $2 more," and there were customers waiting behind me, at this point, I just gave in, paid and left. I had to pay for the card that I never wanted. Such an unpleasant experience! I wouldn't want to come back here EVER again. If I were not buying stuff for other people, I would have just walked out without giving in or have asked for a manager. I didn't want to waste more time because this person I was buying stuff for doesn't speak much English and she was standing next to me as the sales associate kept refusing to cancel this card.
I looked at my receipt and it turned out the card cost $25. Because of the 20% discounts on my purchases, I only had to pay $2 more to get the card and my purchases. So the 20% discounts helped pay for the card and I paid additional $2. Without the 20% discounts, I would have still paid the same amount minus $2. I don't care how much the card costs, even if it's extra $2, I rarely shop at Suzy Shier and I don't NEED the card. Who pays for these loyalty cards anyway? When a customer clearly says I don't want it, I don't know what kind of store just adds the card to my bill without my consent then claims that they cannot cancel my membership.
Sales associates must get bonus of some sort because she was VERY persistent in trying to sell me their prestige card. Watch out for these annoying sales associates.
And please NO means NO. Tell customers clearly how much the loyalty card costs and let them decide. Depending on how the sales associate sold me the card, who knows I might have happily paid for the card and left the store without complaints. Asking "how much does it cost" does NOT mean "yes, add me that card."
Follow-up: after writing this yelp review, I flagged this incident to Suzy Shier and they told me that sales associates CAN cancel loyalty membership at any time and especially before the customer makes the payment. Suzy Shier added that the store manager would speak to the sales associate. I hope Suzy Shier and stores like these don't force customers to purchase their loyalty programs ever again. After this incident, I don't shop at Suzy Shier.
