| - I worship and make nice gainz at this particular temple of Brodin about 5 times/week.
Though it's not the best gym in the world, I'd say it deserves a better rating than the 2 stars it has rn. Over the past few years, I've worked out at a lot of the gyms in Markham - YMCA, Good Life, Club Markham - so I'm a self-proclaimed authority on this subject. Tbh, I'd say it's the best out of all the gyms I've listed, but it still has some flaws.
Let's talk about the positives, and why I'll be lifting here for the foreseeable future.
1) It's located in a convenient location for me - as well as most people in the Unionville area. I live 2 miles from this place.
2) Technologically Friendly. They have nice free Wifi - this is a pretty much a necessity these days with Spotify. You can even watch Youtube videos while your running on the treadmill thanks to the Wifi. Also, LA Fitness has their own app, which means no more forgetting your membership card, as you just scan the barcode that resides within the app on your phone.
3) The overall layout and equipment is nice. It's a huge space, so everything is spread out. I found that YMCA and Good Life were relatively small and everything felt squished tgh, The equipment is relatively clean and good quality as well.
4) Locker space. I can always find a locker. This was a problem at Good Life, where I had to wait for a locker to become available before my workout ffs.
Cons:
1) Equipment. There's only 2 squat racks and 1 power cage. More often than not, all of these are occupied, and I have to wait until one of them frees up before I can do squats, dead lift, OHP. Instead of having more squat racks/power cages, they decided to have 3 Smith machines. The ratio of squats racks + power cages: Smith machines should not equal 1. I understand that LA Fitness is a commercial gym, and wants to make the gym more noob friendly, but if they truly cared about the health and fitness of their members, they'd put more squat racks/power cages.
2) No running track. Very few gyms have this in Markham - I believe YMCA and Cornell - but it'd definitely improve this gym x100. Instead of having literally 30 treadmills, 20 elliptical, 20 bikes at the front of the gym, people could get their cardio fix with a track.
3) Parking lot. Tbh, it's not that bad, as there's a 2nd parking lot off to the side, so you can always get parking. However, on weekday evenings, especially when there's a Zumba/yoga class, don't expect to get a parking spot close to the entrance.
4) Basketball court. This place is packed. All. The. Time. Srsly. One time I woke up at 9:30am and went to shoot around and it was still packed. Also, the court itself is pretty tiny. The boundaries of the court go up to the wall.
5) The music/playlist. I don't know if it's someone's personal playlist or LA Fitness's or what, but the music they play is not conducive to working out. There have been a number of times when I'm in the middle of a set and a Jonas Brothers song comes on. Pro tip: Never forget your earphones so you don't have to listen to their estrogen-infused music.
This particular LA Fitness isn't perfect, but it's the best you're going to get for $100 initiation fee + $40/month in Markham.
