Despite all of the attention lavished on the Pittsburgh food scene recently, we still can't get a decent bowl of ramen in this town. In the case of Tan Izakaya, the situation is worse because they don't even seem to know what proper ramen is.
If you want ramen, don't eat here. We were served lukewarm spaghetti in a tasteless broth and were treated like idiots when we asked why they didn't use real ramen noodles. Soba and Udon are not used in any version of ramen. Period. Full stop. Their insistence that they're serving authentic ramen is as confusing as it is sad.
In addition to the fact that it wasn't actually what anyone would consider ramen, it wasn't even a very good version of noodle soup. Bland broth with no depth of flavor served over slimy pasta. The pork seemed ok, but there was so little of it that if it had been bad, I'm not sure I would have been able to tell.
I would--without hesitation--rather eat top ramen than what we were served. It was gross and hurt my feelings.
