| - Review for Groupon: 1 crepe + soup and coffee
Facility: Parking is free in the rear. Location was a little hard to spot from the outside. They have a small sign. Originally when we arrived, it was closed with no displayed hours. At the time of my Groupon purchase, I couldn't find the hours of the store online either. I was slightly annoyed about that and waited another month before returning.
Inside the cafe, it was spacious with a TV that the staff control. During the time we were there, they played Christmas music on the television and then switched to Wall-E. There were only about 3 small tables occupied on a Wednesday afternoon. Tables were clean. When you arrive, you go up to the cash and pay right away.
Despite having a Groupon, you pay taxes and tip up front. For two, it cost me $5. In all honesty, I think this is a poor practice and that the owner of Crepes on Main may want to reconsider this practice. It puts off the patron who has to fork over extra money up-front for a service not yet received. Additionally, it does not motivate the servers to give any more service than the bare minimum because they know exactly what "tip" they are making. Tip needs to be optional and taxes should already be included in the Groupon price. Have the patron pay for it AFTER food and service. Making me pay before hand gives me the impression that you don't trust your customers and that a few dollars up front is worth more to you than a customer's positive experience. This is a risky choice for an establishment on Main Street Unionville. Please revise or do not be surprised if all that customers you get are simply "Grouponers" looking for a deal and not loyal patrons passing on the experience and recommending you to others.
Food Quality & Price: I spent $9 on each Groupon (which includes a crepe, soup and coffee.
The Crepe - you fill out a card, your choice of 3 toppings and unlimited spreads/sauces. Submit your card and the staff will make your crepe. I was told to "pick it up at the counter when they called" by the female staff member when no one was around. (So why am I tipping you?) At the end, a male staff member (the owner? manager)? brought our food to our table. Contrary to other reviewers, the savory crepes we received were pretty stingy. Unlike the photos others submitted, ours was quite flat. My spinach crepe had exactly 10 leaves (I counted). To give them the benefit of the doubt, we ordered a sweet crepe ($8.50, not on the groupon) and it was quite sizable.
BUT, there was a hair in it. ... I picked it out but couldn't be bothered to complain as the staff were behind the counter on their cell phones. (Now I see another reviewer found a hair in his). SHE NEEDS TO WEAR A HAIR NET. YUCK. But when I realized that they didn't even put in the Nutella we ordered, I had to call someone over. The male staff member was courteous. He apologized and took the crepe back. We didn't get a brand new one, just the old one we cut into with Nutella slathered on top...
The Soup - The menu displayed two soups: Barley and Borscht. NEITHER were available that day. They said they "stopped doing that and only have a Soup of the Day". It was Cream of Mushroom, which I didn't mind. The Cream of Mushroom is exactly like that from Tim Hortons. It was fine, the portion was small and delivered to us in a take out cup.
The Coffee - I don't generally drink coffee, so I asked if I could substitute a bagged tea (which in all honesty, should've been cheaper), but was told that there would be a $0.50 surcharge. I declined and just had a coffee. It was also given to us in take out cups with no lid.
Each crepe is $8.50, the Groupon was $9 for a crepe + soup + coffee. It MAY have been worth it if they didn't skimp out on the actual crepe. But you can clearly tell that this establishment counts it's nickels and dimes.
Service: Service was minimal. The male staff (I'm still not sure if he's the owner or the manager) was friendly and delivered what I consider a very standard service. The ladies left much to be desired and they didn't seem like they wanted to be there. I mean, at least fake it, it's your job. But then again, there is little incentive for them to do anything well since we're essentially giving them tip up front. I expected little from them.
Overall: It's an okay place, passable. But you need consistency in service and quality to be successful. I would not purchase the Groupon again. I don't think I would return unless someone else asked me to (and from the looks of how they treat their customers, I don't think anyone will). I'll go somewhere else for crepes. Everything is mediocre and passable, but the clumsy way that service is approached really brings it all down. Such potential clearly being wasted. Those considering the Groupon, I would say to save your money and find another location until this one gets its act together.
