| - Awesome concept but could use some love and kinks to be worked out.
Donuts: FRIED TO ORDER! This is the best part of the experience. You can customize your cake-style donut from batter to filling to topping and then have it cooked in 3-4 minutes. There are only two options for batter (chocolate or vanilla) but the frosting/filling/topping choices are endless. Once you place your order, the donut is cooked in a Willy Wonka-esque deep fryer machine and then finished by hand. The donut is still piping hot when you receive it. I created a vanilla donut with Bavarian creme filling, banana frosting, and coconut topping. The donut batter is yum. The vanilla is basic, not overly vanilla-ey (made-up word) but the crunch is good after being deep fried. The filling and frosting were a letdown, however. Bavarian creme is gummy and not homemade. The banana frosting is also full of artificial flavoring, similar to a banana-flavored Runts candy or hard candy. These two things need attention, big time. Bavarian creme is a popular filling for donuts and it can set a place apart if it doesn't taste like the usual "pre-made" stuff. The banana frosting is also just not good but it's hard to get banana taste without banana extract or flavoring...so maybe this could be a filling instead of a frosting?
DECOR: The space is pretty big but it lacks cleanliness, overall. Presentation of donut variations clutters up the ice cream cases as about 20 of them sit on individal paper plates. They are simply for display but it looks bad. A sign or pictures would suffice. Instead, there is a small paper printout of how to order a donut. There are also old leather couches, full of crumbs, and the floor is pretty filthy. Bathrooms also need some attention. These are all things that make people come back, especially to a food establishment.
SERVICE: excellent! The one-man show was great for us but we were the only ones in there. He was attentive, informative, hospitable, and great at making the donuts.
A return visit is in the future but maybe after the donut factory has time to iron out its new wrinkles. Looking forward to it!
