  • This is a good store if you are looking for quality American-made solid wood furniture. They have a decent-size showroom, plus several large catalogs that show hundreds of additional items. You can (I assume) buy the items in the showroom, but I would guess that most customers are using the showroom and catalogs to get ideas, and then ordering the item they want. Everything is made to order, so you can choose from a large variety of woods and finishes, including both stain and paint. They are also able to modify pieces (e.g., adjust dimensions, add or remove features) or help you with a completely custom-designed piece. The main downside to the built-to-order approach is the time -- it takes around 8-10 weeks to get your furniture, so plan with that in mind. (Don's does not make the furniture themselves; they are a middleman for several Amish shops elsewhere in the Midwest.) The salespeople are friendly and low-pressure (I believe they're not on commission, which likely helps). Price-wise, I was pleasantly surprised. Obviously, it's not cheap, and if you order all-custom mahogany furniture, you'll pay and arm and a leg. But for standard pieces, the prices are similar to the wood furniture items from Pottery Barn. Perhaps a bit higher. The difference, of course, is that Pottery Barn is often not solid wood (lots of wood products and veneers), is manufactured and shipped from overseas. You'll get far better quality for your money here than at Pottery Barn, West Elm, etc. This stuff is going to last decades. Plus, if you want to add a piece later, they'll always be able to make something in the same wood and finish to match what you already have. One reason I didn't give this store 5 stars is that the pricing is not transparent. Largely this is because the cost depends on what wood/finish you choose. However, there's a lot they could do in terms of posting information -- for example, lists of the lowest, middle, and highest-priced woods, that could help customers make a decision. As it is now, for each an every item that you're interested in, you need to ask the salesperson to draw up a specific quote, even if it's a standard catalog item without modifications. And since the catalogs don't list prices either... well, it just makes the shopping process somewhat difficult, especially in the early stages when you're trying to narrow down what you are interested in. The other aspect I wasn't crazy about is that the styling of furniture skews pretty traditional/country, and in some cases, dated. They definitely have some gorgeous contemporary pieces, as well as some great mid-centry modern-esque items, but for the most part, they seem to be catering to Baby Boomer generation style. Us younger customers would find a lot to love if they could offer a larger selection of updated pieces (e.g., Room and Board).
