Preface: Non poker friends do not understand my job. So here goes, a satirical look into professional poker through a review of the WSOP.
From humble beginnings to the single, most important poker tournament series in the world. Win the $10k main event, become an instant multi millionaire and immortalized as world champion. About money, the Main Event awards more cash than the Super Bowl, MLB World Series, and the Masters combined. And that's just ONE of the 60+ bracelet events, countless daily tourneys, MTT and SNG satellites and cash games. Best part, anyone willing to buy-in can play. Excited yet?
The WSOP brings with it the hottest poker action in Vegas. Aria, Bellagio, Wynn, Venetian and the Golden Nugget, all launch their own tourney series. Cash game action, unbelievable, as steaks rise and nosebleed tables abound. There are more games of PLO being spread at Aria than NLHE, most in the 5/5, 5/10, 10/20 range, and more 5/10, 10/20, 25/50 NLHE games than all the low limit 1/3, 2/5 NLHE games at the Bellagio. Need higher stakes? Join the 600/1200 MIX at Ivey's room or one of the two tables of 1500/3000 MIX in Bobby's Room. Chinese Poker? 2-7 NL Triple Draw? 5 Card Omaha? Hi-Lo Variants? Big-O? Caesars Entertainment, owners of the WSOP, have continued to improve over the years. The space has expanded, tourney schedules have been scattered so games do not need to be picked up. Cash dealers have been better trained in multi disciplines of poker. Rules are updated with the evolution of the game and are well codified and moderately well enforced by floors, easy access to funds through wire transfers to the cage. I'm so excited I could [fill in the blank]!
Biggest positive changes, online preregistration (no more hour long registration lines) and acceptance of credit cards. You can now play with money you don't have to enter tourneys up to $1,500!
So yes, despite the rising rake for cash games and the rising hold for tourneys (now up to 10 percent for most bracelet events, 6 percent for the 10k Main Event), the growing media coverage, silly sponsorship, etc, the WSOP remains THE poker event. Hey, I'm still excited!

Epilogue: My job is like yours. I'm a shark. Working 100+ hour a week giving up weekends and holidays. When not at a poker table, spending hours in meetings with fellow players discussing past hands or sitting behind a computer watching countless hours of televised footage, online discussions of hand histories or reading hundreds of pages on the newest game theory or studying body language. All this to achieve one goal: make a living.
