  • I can't say that I feel this place lived up to all the hype my friends gave it. For starters, if you are interested in learning about how to paint (ex:how to gesso your own canvas or the differences between animal, vegetable & synthetic brushes) you wont learn that here. And if you're the artistic type and know the difference between real art vs. commercialized mass reproductions that are squirted out by companies such as Target & Wal-mart; then this is definitely not the place for you!!! I knew all this before I registered but I am trying to become more involved & supportive of my friends. So what is Painting with a Twist? It's a dumbed down/ extremely commercialized version of my first grade class. In fact, if you went to your local library & signed out childrens how to draw books that is exactly what this experience is but on a much more expensive scale. Basically the instructor shows you how to draw shapes and mix paint colors to create the same exact painting every other person is making. It's not that this is a bad idea, it is just not executed well and gives people the wrong impression about what art truly is. The annoying & very loud music that plays throughout class doesn't help the situation either. The environment is very rushed, there is absolutely no room for creativity or to work, my tables easels kept moving & you had no room on your pre-made paper plate full of paint to mix colors. The instructor did offer what I thought was a great suggestion for drawing on your canvas after it's painted; which is to use chalk. However, I was wrong- as you painted over your chalk outlines the acrylic became clumpy & more than half your drawing was erased as you were instructed to jump all over the painting instead of doing one thing at a time. There was no focus & the brushes we used were way too big for the fine details they wanted you to create... I was also highly annoyed that during the class they stop to advertise their other services; this should be done before everyone leaves not during a course or at all- it's very tacky! They do offer some really cute ideas and again, this is an "okay" thing for those of you who like to make crafts but not art. It is also a great idea as a gift or a night out but ; as said before; you could save yourself a lot of wasted money and do this at home with your friends on a much cheaper scale! And, they didn't really provide wine, the cart was kept in the corner of another classroom and wasn't even mentioned to anyone during the class.... not my glass of wine but a good experience for those of you who like to buy things & not actually make them.
