I can't tell you how many times I have been here in the last couple of years. There is so much to see and so many fabulous special events that I just can't seem to stay away! I am not "musical", do not play an instrument, do not sing (can't even carry a simple tune!), but I so love this place. The history and creativity of so many who have music running in their blood are all on display for everyone to enjoy.
Want to hear a specific artist and his/her music? Or a type of instrument? Or a country? Or a region of the world? It is all here. Almost too much to see in one day. (Reason for my multiple trips!) And if you want to attend one of their "Experience" showcases, that is a full day's visit. I attended the "Experience France" last weekend. My wine cup "runneth" over! We listened to the performance of the Arizona band ZAZU play "gypsy jazz with reckless abandon." "Performance worthy of a 1930's nightclub . . ." ZAZU performs around the state, but they are something extra-special at the MIM. French gypsy jazz. Who knew there even was such a thing?
There is always something happening at the MIM on weekends. Don't let the large, full parking lot fool you. It is not crowded inside. This museum is so large and there are so many wonderful things to see and absorb musically that you never feel like cattle. Take in the special drumming exhibit. Let the kiddos enjoys trying out all the international instruments in the gallery set up just for beeping and drumming and bopping! Take your time. Wander. Listen. Learn. Even a non-musical human can thoroughly enjoy their day(s) here. Can't see it all? Stop for lunch in the cafe. Take a breather. But not too long. MIM Music is waiting for you.
