| - Was never a big fan of Dunkin's Donuts growing up in California. Mainly due to the fact that I don't have any memories of ever trying their donuts growing up. Apparently there was no Dunkin' Donuts locations in California until Nigel Travis, Dunkin' Donuts' CEO, announced that their franchises will be available in California starting in 2015! Even now, I find it strange that Cali tourists would buy a few dozens to take back with them (much like my friend Derrick Wong would bring 2-3 dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts when visiting us in Fremont back in the early dot com days) after their stint in Sin City.
As a kid I was more of a Winchells donuts guy, before the whole Krispy Kreme's donuts craze, subsequent explosion and eventual stock crash. I was happy with just bags of doughnut holes from the local Safway supermarket my mom bought for me and my siblings, so we have something to snack on while watching after school cartoons from 3pm to 5pm. So now you know a little about my childhood, and knowing is half the battle. G.I. Joe!!!
Fast forward 30 or so light years, and Dunkin's Donuts have developed this reputation as having really good coffee. It is not even a boutique yuppie, hippie, hipster coffee place, or even one with 99.3% naked baristas jiggling their assets as your custom made order of Joe is served. Not a Starbucks or Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf or McDonald's (?!?) even. Coffee is their game. Coffee!!! Not doughnuts/donuts!? Twilight zone weird.
With $10 billion revenue earned in 2015, this global donut shop and coffeehouse chain has certainly come a long way from their first store in Massachusetts founded in 1950. Even in Lima, Peru, they have American tourist (aka my friend from San Francisco) going "oh my god, they have Dunkin' Donuts here! I love their coffee". That location is very upscale dining looking & located next to the beach in a very high end shopping and entertainment mall too.
This location on S Las Vegas Blvd is presentable, not overly hip looking (like the relatively new one that was built from the ground up on W. Sahara), but still looking very inviting at dusk with the contrast of the brightly lit florescent neon interior against the fading orange sun. It is clean and organized looking. The staff does their best to provide good customer service. The one at the register helping us knew exactly which item they were currently out of, offered suggestion for alternatives and even threw in a free one (so I can taste test their 2 croissant donut varieties) once I was done finalizing my order.
Personally I think their donuts are just alright. I don't get the hype or need to transport them 4 or more hours to share with their Cali- friends, relatives, coworkers or anyone they intend to curry favor from for that matter. Did I already mentioned they booked $10 billions in global revenue in 2015? So yeah, they must be doing something right.
Regarding Dunkin' Donuts coffee. It is IMO better than Starbucks. But mentally I think people still get a better status boost walking into work or wandering the mall with their subtle look at my Kung-Fu grip on a Starbucks logo beverage container rather than one sporting the Dunkin' Donuts logo. Mental disconnect that still require un-brainwashing. McDonald's iced coffee still trump them all though.
I will more than likely be back, since my coworkers love visiting BWW a few doors down on Tuesday to get buzzed off Stella and their cheap, just alright wings with the usual side of minimal customer service. I only come because of the occasional eye candy, now that school is back in session & the ever optimistic hopes of one day discovering a donut that I really can rave about.
