  • SETTING Fancy and dressy. Dim lighting. Large venue with plenty of seating. Sonoma is a region in California, and the decor does not really reflect that. There is a bit of a European vibe with the flower pots, wall art, and pictures, so I was a bit confused what the theme is really, if there even is one. FOOD Tapas: Pork Belly BLT. I loved how it was not too much fat, but a good ratio of a thick pork meat to pork belly fat. Underneath the pork belly was some pickled lettuce and sauce. Had an asian fusion type of taste. Highly recommend it to share among two people. Entrees: 1) Field & Stream--a venison (deer) dish. We ordered medium rare, but the meat was tough enough that it tasted like it was medium well. The smoked trout mousse had a little too strong of a taste and did not really compliment the deer meat. It was a bit too overpowering each time I had a bite of the trout mousse. On the other hand, the fennel salad and asparagus were a bit underwhelming and did not add much to the dish. Overall it was okay, but I probably wouldn't order it again 2) Crispy Indonesian Glazed Duck. I love duck and this dish did not disappoint! It had an asian fusion vibe similar to how the Pork Belly BLT was put together. There was a lot (*fist pump*) of duck meat. The meat was glazed with a light sauce that had a hint of sweetness. Plenty of stir fried vegetables accompanied the healthy serving of meat very well. The rice cakes underneath the meat was pretty much crunchy fried rice. It was delicious! I highly recommend this entree :) Dessert: Chocolate Creme Brulee. Creme Brulee is one of my favorite desserts, and Sonoma did a terrific job with their version. A heads up, it is NOT custardy at all. Underneath that sugared top later is a rich dark chocolate mousse (in place of the custard). Above the sugared coating was malt chocolate ice cream and a square of toffee. So. Much. Chocolate! I felt like I was getting a cavity from the richness. It was so good! SERVICE Excellent and thorough. Hats off to Alan, our server for the night. He was very polite and accommodating. He asked us if we were catching a show later that evening (first time seeing "Carmen"!) and told us he would make sure we had enough time to eat and make the show without rushing. Very kind gesture. Since this was our first time at Sonoma, we asked him for suggestions. He gave us a quick yet detailed run-down of the menu and his favorites. From the tapas to the entrees to the dessert, he recommended the right dishes (aside from the venison), and we were so glad we listened! Thanks, Alan! IMPRESSION Pretty good food with above average sized servings. No complaints there (you know me)! I would definitely get the pork belly BLT, duck, and creme brulee if I come back again. Service was terrific and prompt. Overall, we had a great time. Made it to Carmen with more than enough time to spare!
