The owner called me after reading my review and said she had no idea what Samantha had said to me because she took the phone in the back room when she called. She did apologize for Sam's behavior and said that she has had complaints about her prior so she most likely would not be with Swank for much longer. Apparently she believed Sam did extra services without telling me the cost so that her "tip would be higher." She also offered to have me come in for a discounted service one time to make up for the cost and other issues that happened. She mentioned that she isnt typically on the phone while with clients but they were experiencing and audit, so it was very necessary. Totally understandable. I do appreciate her calling. It was nice of her to go out of her way.
ORIGINAL: I went here for color and cut. The cut was not the worst, but not exactly the best cut I've gotten (I did end up going home to trim off some ends with vertical scissoring bc the ends were too blunt for me). I let her know what I was looking to spend - and that I do not get a base color with highlights due to it being an extra $50. Much to my dismay, the total was $193. I received PARTIAL highlights, lo-lights (which I wasn't sure if I had actually wanted - she talked me Iinto getting a few to break up the blonde) and a cut. I should mention that I have chin length hair. That's some crazy money unless I'm getting some super awesome something done. She didn't even finish all the side highlights on the partial hi-light because I told her I didn't want her to (due to aesthetic).
I called today to ask why the cost was so high for chin length hair when I didn't get a base color to cover gray. She mentioend that the base break that she did was $40. Had I known that she was charging me anything extra, let alone $40 for a base break that she suggested, and left on my wet hair for 10 minutes at the sink, I would have opted to not get it. She never mentioned that. I am not sure why she would do a base break that cost $40 when I specifically stated that I dont get a base color to avoid that extra charge. Also, and possibly the most insulting part...she told me "it depends where you go...if you go to a salon in the country (i'm from the burbs) then it will be cheaper. If you go to the city, it will be more expensive." I cannot tell you how insulting that was to me. Just because I live in the suburbs does NOT mean that I've never gotten my hair done in big cities (much bigger than Pittsburgh). I lived in Baltimore for 2 years and went to one of the high end salons there...my hair was longer at the time and was not $160 before tip.
Finally, there was another woman there (the owner?) who seemed very nice but talked on the phone with her husband while she colored another patron's hair. She kept the phone tucked with her chin to her shoulder the whole time. I wouldbe furious if that were me.
I have already talked about my experience with coworkers and friends and did not recommend. I will drive just about anywhere to get a good color and cut...but this place will not be one of them.
