  • This past Thursday I visited this Best Buy with the intention of purchasing my first digital dashboard camera (also called car camera and accident camera). In Las Vegas bad driving with hit and run crashes is alarming. Hit and run crashes had become so out of control that the legislature made this crime a felony. After hearing so many horrible stories of hit and runs and witnessing so many reckless drivers, I decided to become an electronics pioneer by joining the 4% of American drivers that drive with a digital dashboard camera. Unfortunately I have a rudimentary knowledge of the phledging digital dashboard camera market. More unfortunately, I knew more than the sales associate in Best Buy. Off of a busy Charleston Avenue I stepped inside of a dead Best Buy. When I walked in the greeter seemed more occupied with watching somebody on camera than greeting the customer. I took the initiative to ask where the digital dashboard cameras are. He told me that they are in the back of the store by the automobile electronics. The fact that Best Buy, the nation's largest electronics chain features a display case for digital dashboard cameras is encouraging news for drivers that want a digital eye witness to capture crashes and crimes while driving plus a toy that can capture the Red Rock Canyon National Scenic Drive, Mount Charleston, and scenic drives. It is discouraging that there was zero sales associate with knowledge of their product. It seems that in this day and age, Best Buy drives sales with posted reviews by the products. If I wanted to read reviews instead of talking to a person, Amazon would be the place. It is nice that there is a display of digital dashboard cameras, however, they are all locked up. Best Buy needs to display samples of these devices along with a video. It would bring excitement to the product showing a digital dashboard camera capturing a red light runner causing a crash without violence or an accident victim showing the police video from the dash cam that the other driver ran the red light. This one display case is my reflection of the Summerlin Best Buy. Furthermore what made it more frustrating visiting an electronics store without seeing a knowledgeable sales associate was that in the digital dashboard camera segment there is a different field of brands that I never heard of. Brands like Sony, Canon, Nikon, and others have yet to leave their mark on this electronics frontier. I did get the attention of a sales associate in the department. He admitted that he was not familiar with digital dashboard cameras. His advice was to go on my phone to read the reviews. As I looked at a box for what seemed like a minute, he is still looking at me. I am thinking to myself, "Is there somebody that knows about these products that can assist me?" I told him that I don't need help and that I'll look at the boxes and reviews. By now I was decided on searching for a digital dashboard camera somewhere else. Best Buy would turn into No Buy.
