| - The Dessert Lady sits somewhere between a grocery store bakery and a truly top quality place in terms of both quality and price. The space is large and totally open, which I like because it allows you to see the action in the kitchen. There's no seating, so you'll have to take your treats to go.
There's a decent selection of baked goods here: cookies, biscotti, cakes, cupcakes, and a few other things. They also have ice cream, which is made in house.
I tried the Mango Coconut Mousse Cake ($20 for a 6" cake). It was big enough to serve 6 people with modest appetites. It's a good option if you're looking for a cake that isn't too heavy. Both the mango and coconut mousses were excellent. One of the staff members did a great job of putting a message on the cake and he even put on some fresh fruit.
Unfortunately, the cupcakes, while reasonably priced, are not nearly as good as the cake. They have four flavours of cupcakes: vanilla ($1.35), chocolate ($1.35), amaretto ($2), and red velvet ($3). The first three are topped with buttercream icing and the red velvet is topped with cream cheese icing. I've tried all but the amaretto flavour and found them to be quite dry and not particularly flavourful. Of the three flavours I've tried, red velvet is my favourite.
Fix your cupcake recipe Dessert Lady and I might give you another star.
