| - This place is the coffee equivalent of an alcoholic speakeasy.
Hidden within the regal wooden doors of a nondescript warehouse plaza in Chinatown lies a world where a Korean historian made love to a Victorian librarian, both with an apparent flair for impeccable gardening... and Gabi Coffee & Bakery would be their baby. That's as best as I can describe it, so you'll have to see it for yourself.
I had missed the two days of soft opening, but I think it was better this way -- it was practically empty when I came in so I had the best service and attention. Upon swinging the door, I was immediately greeted and welcomed. The greenhouse is the centerpiece and the ambiance envelops you, it's worth 5 stars alone. I don't think I've been this excited about a coffee shop before.
I knew I wanted to try a bite and a sip, so I chose the green tea bun and a simple espresso totaling about $8. The bun was soft and the filling sweet, but it did not taste anything like green tea to me. I've never had espresso alone, but it got me wired. Full-bodied and almost bitter, I asked for some cream to add to my demitasse cup.
The employees seemed overstaffed, but better than too little. I was checked on constantly as I situated myself on the peacock-looking sofa and just soaked in the novel ambiance. Since I was by myself, I asked if I could have some pictures taken with the scenery, lol. Fun times. I forgot one guy's name, but the other was Garzi (sp?) and he was super nice.
I'll be back to try the photogenic Lychee Rose and that Norwegian Smoked Salmon brioche. Gabi Coffee & Bakery is a magical retreat from the Vegas heat.
