| - I think this could possibly be my most conflicted review in my whole Yelp-life.
So, I'm going to have to review the Greater Cleveland Aquarium from two perspectives:
1) Proud Clevelander
2) Clevelander with kid(s) in tow
First off, as a Clevelander I have to express how happy I am to have an aquarium downtown. Not only did we utilize a great building (nixing some pretty "meh" businesses along the way), but it's going to be a positive draw down to the flats. I mean, be honest--before the Aquarium the only things to bring you down to the Flats these past few years are sketchy strip clubs, gambling and Shooters (bahaha, Shooters...)
The Aquarium itself is really cool, too. The way they used the space and you work your way through is something you'd never expect. There are really neat tanks you can look up at, tunnels, sharks and huge, interactive areas with lots of fish to touch. I really thought the the one area with a focus on fresh water and Lake Erie species was really interesting. I didn't get to read quite as much as I wanted to throughout because we were with a my boyfriend's son, but it looked like there was lots of literature around.
Overall, a great experience that I would love to revisit and watch grow over time.
Now, from the perspective of a family with children, it's a little different. I know everyone keeps saying this, but cost-cost-cost. Sixty dollars for two adults and one child, a 30 minute wait to get inside and we were done in about 45 minutes--that is a lot. Keep in mind that we were done so quickly because our 7yr old partner in crime has a .2 second attention span, so we borderline ran through the place. If you took your time and really checked everything out, your experience would most likely take longer and be much better. But, you really have to consider how both people with or without families will do in a place like this. Especially since most of the visitors are going to have kids with them.
So, yea -- I think I'm going to have to settle with 4 stars for now. For the most part, I don't really think I could have said it better than yelper Cami T. But I do see if from some of the families' perspectives.
Go there, check it out and don't go with any ideas in your mind. It's not the Shedd Aquarium or any other you might want to compare it to. It's Cleveland's Aquarium. It's new, it's our's, it will grow, it will get better and it's awesome.
