| - It's all about the bread.
I work at an office building next door to this restaurant and it's become my regular pit stop for take out on Friday evenings.
I've ordered all of their hot and cold subs multiple times by now and they're all good; my favorites being Italian Cold Cuts, Meatball, and Eggplant Parmigiana.
The Italian Cold Cuts has the standard variety of good quality meats and cheese, proper balance between meats and veggies, with just enough dressing that's not too strong or acidic so you can still taste the other ingredients.
The hot subs, especially the Meatball, have a generous amount of the main ingredient with tomato sauce that's just the way I like it and plenty of good quality melted cheese.
After having visited here several times I began to think about why I like their sandwiches so much and I realized that, as much as anything else, it's the simple fact that they use decent sub rolls.
On a side note, it's amazing to me how popular some sub sandwich franchises have become with clientele who apparently don't know what a decent sub roll should be.
So, what in my opinion is a decent sub roll? It's one that's fresh, tasty its own without additional seasoning, and just chewy enough to add the right consistency and feel without being too limp and soggy or too firm to cause the meats and fixings to squish out when you bite down.
This is not to say that the sub rolls at Little Chicago are necessarily the best artisan bread you've every tasted. Never the less, it's just nice to have a really good sub on a decent roll.
By the way, they DO NOT ask you if you want white or wheat when you order a sandwich; thank goodness for that as well.
I expect I will continue to be quite content for a while with cycling through the list of subs on their menu and will eventually give their pasta dishes a try.
