  • Oh man, this is going to be a novel! I am one of the thousands of Americans who DON'T have a dental plan. So my options as far as affordable dentists seem pretty limited. I went with Southwest Dental because they have their own discount plan (that you pay for annually). When I did the math, it would be considerably cheaper to pay for their discount plan and get the work I need done with them than it would be to pay out-of-pocket at another dentist. When I got to the office for my initial exam I was pretty horrified. The refugee camp comment is spot on, their waiting room is packed and overflowing. When I got into the exam room the equipment was old, cracked, with peeling paint and mysterious stains. That's when I started to panic a little. They looked me over, told me what I needed (cleaning and sealants), and then scheduled two appointments down the line for these procedures. One (the sealants) was a month away, the other (the cleaning) two months away. One month later- I end up sick as a dog with awful food poisoning and have to call in and cancel my sealants appointment. I explain to them that I have food poisoning, can't come in for sealants. They say OK, no problem, today's appointment canceled. I crawl back to bed for recovery time. Another month down the line, my cleaning appointment rolls around. I show up at the crack of dawn (it seems), ready for some serious pain before I go to work and they tell me, "You don't have an appointment today. You canceled it." me: "...no, i canceled the sealants appointment. The one that was scheduled for LAST month." them: "Oh, we must have assumed you wanted to cancel both." ....durrrrrrr! So, I set up a new appointment, a week later, which went off without a hitch. Thankfully, the cleaning room equipment was not as nightmare-inducing as the stuff in the exam room. Once I was done with my cleaning I tried to schedule an appointment to have sealants replaced. Except, the only available appointment - for anything - was a YEAR away. They said that's just how their system works (then how come I could get appointments only months and weeks away before?!?!), and people call in and cancel all the time... so if I wanted an earlier appointment, I could call back repeatedly oh... every week. Until there was an opening. Fantastic! Is it any surprise I just didn't bother scheduling an appointment and haven't called them back at all? They get two stars cause my teeth cleaning was OK... not horrific, but not the best either.
