I could not wait to try Charlies before moving to Phoenix. I love country music and the lifestyle and heard it was the only gay mens Country bar in Phoenix. I now know it is not a country bar at all. The bartenders can wear cowboy apparel all it wants but it doesnt make it country. Even the music is only country for a few hours and only on certain days. The patio is the best part of this place since it is very open. Drinks are reasonably priced however on the weekends it takes far too long to get to the front of the line. The parking lot is large however there are far too many drunks either walking or driving around it which makes it very dangerous. The bar accepts cards however it is for cash back only and I know it is a $2-3 charge per transaction. The drag shows are 2/5 at best since most of the jokes are about insulting the bars patrons and the queens are pretty nasty looking. I only go here now when a friend from out of town has heard so much about Charlies (it is pretty well known) that they feel it is a must see. Fortunately it only takes one drink for us to leave since they quickly find it out there is nothing special about it. (BTW, I am pretty sure it is the only gay bar in Phoenix that does not allow you to bring in your purse, they will turn you away).
