  • I too am a victim of the home warranty/Old West debacle. In the middle of the hottest time, one of our units went out. The capacitor likely blew, and this unit is coming up on 20 years old. Last summer, when it got hot, we had a similar issue. Let me also preface this by saying that our units were placed under a patio/awning by the builder. So, come back to present, and we put in a warranty request. We are assigned OWB and the "mutually convenient time" is a text message that you can't reply to. My time frame was 3 days from the date of request, between 9 and 1. At 12ish, I get a call saying that though my appointment was between 11 and 3 (it was not), Steve was on his way. An hour later, he arrives. The truck says OWB, but his shirt reads "CNN Refrigeration". This is an allegedly defunct company that we had before, and we had to complain, because the tech came completely wasted drunk. Questionable. Steve replaces the capacitor and tells us that we need to build a scoop to vent the air outward. My husband makes the mistake of saying that he was thinking of moving the AC units from under the patio. That brings us to last week. Our same AC unit stops blowing cold. We must have a small friend leak, because we need to add freon every year. So again, Steve shows up and says that we need to turn the unit off, and he'll be back tomorrow. What????? So tomorrow comes and goes. I try to call all afternoon,.and get caught in the humanless phone tree loop that never allows you to leave a message. I go on the web and leave an email through the contact page. Nada. The next day, I start calling. I get to leave a voicemail in the afternoon. I call again in the evening, and lo and behold, I get a human. Steve isn't coming. What am I talking about? Silly me. Guess coming back tomorrow was a term of endearment. She tells me that he can come back the next day between 9 and 1. She then calls back and change it to 10 and 2. He shows up at 930 and adds freon, like we told him in the first place. He tells me that I need to give him an answer on when we plan to move the AC units, and that we need to make the scoop. This unit has worked fine for 5 years. Damn scoop. He tells me to call back with any problems within 30 days. Try 30 minutes. That brings me to later that evening. I return home after doing some errands. No AC. Sounds like the capacitor blew again. It is 90 in my house. Thank heavens for an upstairs unit, because I feel for those stuck with no air at all. I call. Nada. I schedule a revisit with my warranty company. Nada. I call again and am able to leave a message. Nada. And that's where it is. No air. No call. Is this Old West? Is this CNN? Is Steve the only guy? Do they fix anything?
