  • Shocked I'm the first to review this. Maxim is exactly the kind of place Yelp was created for. I may be the first Yelper but rest assured when you walk in that, though you may not recognize the faces, the customers around you will include assistant Attorneys General, a legislator or two, the governor's chief of staff, etc etc. My most recent celebrity sighting there was former Arizona U.S. Attorney Paul Charlton (a component of the US Attorney firing scandal in Washington, for political junkies). Maxim is a small, dingy Vietnamese/Chinese restaurant located in a crappy strip mall in a sketchy part of town. The tiny parking lot is in serious need of repair. You will likely have to step over a mysterious puddle of water, or something, to get out of your car or get to the entrance. The restaurant is inconveniently located a mile or two west of downtown, and can be slightly annoying to find if you don't know exactly where it is. Which should tell you a lot, considering its popularity with downtown workers, like Mr Charlton. The strip mall is itself a bit of an oddity because every small business within it is Vietnamese-owned. I hope for the sake of our Vietnamese community that this isn't Phoenix's "Little Saigon" but it might well be. A polite gentleman who speaks very little English will take your order. The lunch combo selections are what you would expect at any Chinese restaurant, plus a variety of Vietnamese choices. The food is tasty. Delicious soup accompanies every meal. I think my favorite small detail is the simple fact that every table in the place includes everything you need, 3-4 different kinds of sauces to spice up your entree, napkins, all at your fingertips from the moment you sit down. Despite my description of the run-down strip mall, I should point out that Maxim while being no-frills is clean. I checked its county health inspection records on-line and they are very good (4 golds and 5 silvers since October 2004). No surprise considering how often I see government folks lunching here (since they know better than the rest of us). I have no idea what the story behind the name of the restaurant is. No, I have not seen any hot Maxim calendar girls there.
