  • A Diner with a restaurant identity crisis or is the other way around either way it stands in a VERY good way. I've put off stopping here purely because of location. NO LONGER! I've been missing the diners of NJ and was in the neighborhood. The growlings of a homesick foodie are put at bay. The initial pungency of sewer gas/grease trap/trash at the front door (hey, it's summer, in the south. No worse than the smells of Elizabeth, NJ but, notable) was a put off until the gates of baked goods shangri la opened and you are encased in the aroma of cinnamon rolls and whatever goodies were baking this AM. Not only are you greeted by a host/hostess you are treated to the classic clatter of coffee cups and plates behind the glass case of cakes, pies and pastries (OH MY) had me planning dessert before seeing the lunch menu. Planning on a burger or club sandwich, you know, "the tell' for any diner worth its chops in the NE (or is it the meatloaf and gravy?). Seated in the middle of the larger dining room (there are two sides) it is minimally decorated, which is a good thing as it focuses you on who you are with, whether it be a book or your lovely spouse, I was with the latter. Not the tome of a menu you expect in a diner but enough to sample from all that you could desire and BREAKFAST ALL DAY! Coffee is elegant and flavorful. I did not have breakfast but, too notice of other plates as they went about the dining room and they looked to be standard: eggs, omelets, bacon , sausage, golden hash browns/ home fries and thick slices of toast. We started with the thick cut onion rings. Thick, tender and sweet onion, crunchy and not over battered or greasy served with a savory remoulade that made me want to order another batch as a side. I opted for the feature of The Skyliner, a pound of (tender) corned beef, (perfectly) roasted turkey and (glorious) pastrami topped with swiss cheese, grainy mustard and horseradish between two slices of first bite to last (yes, I REALLY did eat the whole sandwich) hold it all together, not soggy, airy GRILLED rye bread. My lovely bride chose the steak burger (excellently cooked) bright pink medium. Speechless was the rest of the meal except for the "how is it?' and that was almost ignored. Not a sample bite was offered on either end (wife does not like and to her regret, pastrami or corned beef) and she was enjoying her burger to much for me to risk losing a finger. The fries are crisp and hot and almost an afterthought considering the in house made bread and rolls the sandwiches are served on. Consider another side from the regular fries, like the sweet potato fries or mixed green salad. The Chef checks on tables in the downtime of his expo. duties and is genuinely interested in your delight. Dessert was not eaten (I just ate a pound+ of meat and bread come on give me a break) but, the Triple D was considered and will be happening sometime soon. Miranda (our waitress) was knowledgeable, polite, quick and at the end of the meal offered "roadies" of water or coffee. Well worth the visit and I will be going back for my own burger and the Triple D!!
