| - The best gelato in Phoenix? The best gelato in all of Arizona? Christ, one person even says it's the best gelato outside of Italy! Sometimes, I wish people wouldn't say things like this, because it really skews your expectations.
Let's be honest here. Amore is good, don't get me wrong. But a lot of gelato places in Phoenix are good. Is it the best I've ever had? Most certainly not, and that's without ever visiting Italy, but eating one whole hell of a lot of gelato here in the U.S.
Anyway, my girlfriend and I stopped by on a late Saturday night to find Amore to be pretty packed. It appears to be a go-to place for many people in the surrounding neighborhood based on what I've read. In addition to gelato, they also offer Italian bakery goods that are similar to what you'd find at most Italian delis or bakeries.
We kind of felt very rushed walking in, as other people immediately came in right behind us. The guy behind the counter didn't ask us if we wanted to sample anything, so we assumed it was forbidden. Only later did we discover that you can, indeed, sample flavors if you wish.
Anyway, I do like that they'll let you do half-half flavors in a small size, without forcing you to purchase a bigger cup. I ordered half limoncello and half bacio, which is similar to the flavor of Nutella or Gianduia. My girlfriend ordered a combination of both cinnamon and bianco & nero (black and white). The cinnamon, in particular, was very good and reminded her of the flavor of a well-made Mexican horchata.
Flavor was very good. Their gelato texture is more on the creamy aside, which is definitely not a bad thing at all. Clearly, it's one of the better options in East Valley to be sure.
