| - There is absolutely nothing wrong with Advantage Rent-a-Car and anyone reading the negative reviews should take them with a grain of salt. They are like every other car rental company out there in that they try to upsell you-- it's up to you to say no to all of the extra services. If you do that, then you will rent a car for less than half the cost of Enterprise, Hertz, Budget, and all of the other big name companies.
Think about it. Why does Advantage charge so much less than the big name companies? It's not because you're paying for less service or quality of car, but because you are not paying for a big name. Advantage is not a huge multinational corporation. They don't have huge advertising budgets to make them a household name, which is why they have to charge so much less than the Budgets and Hertzes of the world or they'd never make it.
When you rent your car, it's up to you to do the following:
1) Refuse an upgrade offer. A 4-cylinder can handle the thin mountain air just as well as a 6-cylinder, so just politely refuse when they suggest an upgrade and stick with the car you ordered online.
2) Decline the insurance. They will try to scare you in that you are responsible for all damage, so if you are nervous about parking at the Grand Canyon or bumpy roads, it might be in your best interest to purchase the insurance. Otherwise, you're on your own.
3) INSPECT THE CAR FULLY before you take it off the lot. That means the tires, the paint, the glass-- all of it. Write up every little scratch you see on the sheet they give you.
Other than that, there is no reason not to rent with Advantage. At an $88 base rate for a Nissan Altima plus around $80 in facility fees and taxes, I had a great car for a full week at half the price of the big name brands. I would recommend booking online before you go to see them so that you can just print out your sheet and say "give me this car and I don't want anything else." They might try to pressure you into something else, just be strong and say no and you'll be a-ok.
