  • Expo downtown at the Convention Center was not fun. It was extremely crowded the first day and it deterred me from returning on Saturday. I like to hit the expos on the first day before out-of-towners flood it. Unfortunately, in Phoenix, it seemed like it was non-participating locals who came for the free food and etc. I like it that the expo is open to the public, but in this case, it opened my eyes to the potential (and realized, for me) problems of doing this. Race course- having participated in this race twice now, I can say that I like the course but here's a kicker: YOU MUST train for hills. Seriously. I had some crazy foot issue on the downhills (most people enjoy downhill, but it can really tax your body. Back to the course: It begins downtown Tempe and winds through portions of Tempe, Phoenix, Scottsdale. I thought it was a bummer that we did actually run a backstreet where there were trash cans and basically you felt like you could be in a "Law and Order" scene. This is where, though, I overtook the shaman running and I think he put some good mojo on me. I do love finishing over Mill Ave Bridge and thought it was an improvement that we spilled into Tempe Beach Park (rather than turning east and further running down the street toward Sun Devil Stadium like a couple years back.) Course access: No problem coming in and getting dropped off about a half mile from the start line, though it was packed and traffic moving very slowly. I happen to know the short-cuts in Tempe (I LOVE TEMPE) so I have that going for me. If you are unfamiliar.... allow time. Fellow runners: Inspiring and fun (as usual) but it stood out this year, here for me: Interesting running wear everywhere (not just the usual tutus etc.). I included some pics. Course support - Impressive! I thought the bands were excellent! The cheerleader types (both in and out of uniform) did us right! Excellent supply of gu and not stinging on the handing it out - Beautiful! After party & band - Tempe Beach Park held the crowd like a champ. The bands were amazing and for once, the sound system was bearable! Don't get me wrong, it was loud, but not "blow your head off" crazy. I liked that Mazda handed out shirts afterward (you got to choose your design) and there were frozen treats. That free Mich Ultra again - no complaints!
