  • Its been an unfortunate breakup for me with KTAR. I used to love KTAR for being a radio station I could depend on for one thing. News. No spin, no commentary, no punditry. Just the news, just the facts, interpret as you see fit. The breakup started for me when KTAR sold their operation to Bonneville International (a subsidiary of the LDS Church). Slowly overtime, the format evolved such that KTAR positioned their station to become a rival of local conservative radio powerhouse KFYI. KTAR's political tilt (for now) is pretty much center-right, which in of itself is fine. But instead of getting the daily news on my drive to work from Connie and Ned, Jim Sharpe and Jayme West now run the show and spend much of the broadcast injecting their own opinions and their own political philosophy. Instead of Heidi Foglesong giving me the news on my drive home, a pair of guys named Mac & Gaydos debate random topics designed to incite blood boiling reactions from listeners, while at the same time debating these issues at the education level of a grade school student. Look, I get it. The radio business is more cutthroat than ever before and in a center-right leaning county like Maricopa, I'm sure the format change was made with ratings in mind. And again, my beef isn't with the fact that KTAR is trying to compete with the KFYIs of the world, but that KTAR has gotten away from what I thought made it great. It was a news station. Not talk radio, not commentary, not opinions, just the news. Maybe that bores most listeners but for me it was a news source I trusted and relied upon specifically because they kept it neutral. With KTAR now no longer embracing that format, I now plug in my iPhone to one of a number of other online news streams instead. Polarizing radio talking heads may sell these days, but I will always yearn for radio stations that embrace unbiased news the way KTAR used to. But hey, at least they kept Detour Dan?
