| - Most condescending employee I have ever encountered. Biking home last night I kept wondering what I did wrong to deserve such a bad attitude but the conclusion is, nothing, it was simply bad customer service. Now that I am reading the other Yelp reviews of that place, I realize that I should have known better - I mean it's a hipster bike shop in a hipster neighborhood, what did I expect.
I've been riding without a helmet for a few days after I lost mine, so it was getting urgent to get a new one. I usually go to MEC but it was never on my way, so when I passed BOW I thought I'd just buy my helmet here. It was a weekday around 6 pm and the store was virtually empty expect for one other customer. My previous helmet was too big for me and badly adjusted so I wanted to make sure I'd buy a fitting helmet this time.
Long story short, I never got a smile, or help, or advice from the woman at the counter. I was polite and asked for help nicely and all I got back was a dead stare and "how are you going to pay?" After I purchased the helmet (thinking that maybe she'd be nicer after she sees that I am giving her my money, but nope), I spent 10 minutes at the counter IN FRONT OF her, struggling to understand how to properly adjust the straps, and asking her if that's how it was supposed to fit. The only thing I got from her was "it's supposed to be tight" then 5 minutes later when my helmet is still loose but all of the straps are as tight as possible I asked if that's normal she replied "yes". Then she left the counter and went to chat with the other employee, while I am still at her counter trying to adjust things. I eventually gave up and rode home with the helmet still in the packaging, thinking I'd return it the next day if it definitely didn't fit. Only when I got home, I noticed it said on the receipt "no refund, only exchange". Wonderful.
That employee really made me feel like I was dumb for asking questions. I get that I was not buying an expensive item like a bike, but when I spend $70 on a helmet I want to make sure it's the correct size for me. And who can I ask for advice about bike helmet adjustment? Apparently not staff from a bike shop.
