| - I have been a member of Fitness 19 in McIntyre Square for many years on a $29.00 per month membership for me and my son. I, myself, haven't been there for 2-3 years, but just kept it rolling for my son. Now that he is out of town and I have decided to join a better gym, I called to cancel. I am on a month to month debit. I called last week and they told me that I had to either come in person or send a certified letter. There was a death in the family this week and I never made it in. Then I saw a debit on my bank account (of course, since they wouldn't close my account). I called again and was told the same. I think this is total bull orchestrated to make it more difficult to cancel. In my world, a certified letter is one you pay extra for at the post office to guarantee delivery. In my second call, the person said "oh that means you sign the letter". Well, if that's true, then I would have sent a letter quickly at the time of my first call. I don't think he knew what it meant. I have just notified my bank that they are not to permit debits from this company in the future, because now I don't trust them. I shall go in to their office this weekend and I will have a letter in hand because I feel these people are not trustworthy. I want everything in writing. I'm waiting to hear back from my bank regarding them denying debits to F 19. I have decided for several reasons that I will no longer have anything debited from my bank account. I was never unhappy with the gym in the years I went (although reviewers are indicating that it has gone down hill - I don't know). The machines are crowded together, so I just used the treadmill and elliptical machine. I would have given it a higher rating for a low cost gym, except for this incident. I can see that customer service is not a priority with them. Why make it so difficult? Would there really be people trying to cancel a stranger's membership? What on earth would the reasoning be, and why couldn't they just ask for some of my information to verify the legitimacy of my call? Cause they don't want cancellations, that's why!
