Fun place to drop in when you're out for a walk in the neighbourhood. They have a vast variety of tea with interesting blends. This is not the place to go if you're a tea purist who prefers high quality natural tea. David's is more known for their flavoured (laced with fruit, chocolate, spices, etc) and seasonally themed (eg. Winter solstice) teas. Their non-flavoured tea is terrible!
The staff are enthusiastic about the products in a similar way to how Lululemon employees are gush about their products. This kind of brand-loyalty is definitely a quintessential Canadian franchise characteristic that these 2 companies share. What I don't like about David's Tea is that the "brand" is becoming too commercial and aggressively competitive. It feels as if the company is trying to monopolize the tea business in Canada as they seem to be popping up everywhere that there's another tea store that they perceive as a competition. For instance, I used to love the tea shop in Bayview Village (which has been there for over 20 years) until David's moved in and now occupies the space. Seems like a strange coincidence. I recently popped into Sanhe Tea (just North of David's) and purchased their high quality tea and was kinda bummed that they are never as busy as David's. And I realized, sadly, it was because David is a marketing/branding genius! More power to him I guess, as he's built a lucrative enterprise. But the realization prompted me to write this review and a more glowing review of Sanhe which is more conservative in their business ambitions and therefore, a company I would rather support. Yonge/Eglinton and Yonge/Lawrence are neighbourhoods that possess a lot of independently owned shops, but with rent increasing on Yonge, the neighbourhood is changing.
