  • Kennywood park has been a longstanding Pittsburgh tradition of amusement parks. School picnics are held here. Special events including the yearly fall fantasy of bands and parades also are a big draw. Kennywood park is one of the few remaining amusement parks that offer not only tiered admission but also a "nightrider" pass of $26.99 if arriving after 5:00. Discount tickets coupons are also available at local Giant Eagle stores for weekday admission. Senior citizen rates start at age 55. Kennywood still has picnic tables which has been a longstanding tradition of families bringing food into the park for an event or family gathering. You are no longer issued wristbands upon entering once you pass the security checkpoint. Rides are clearly indicated with restrictions and a bar is used to certify height requirements for children. Kennywood still has their famous iconic rides and eateries, of the latter, the potato patch is the most popular. The train ride has been revamped to give you a pictorial history of the park. The Merry Go Round is the center of its classic elegance and the famous meeting place for friends. Noah's Ark still remains as their trademark walk through dark ride and the famous Thunderbolt, once known as the "king of the coasters" provides a thrill seeking ride for those who love wooden coasters. Also among "hidden" icons is the famous "Old Mill" boat ride which has been remodeled to Garfield's nightmare. Kennywood offers something for everyone in your family. For thrill seekers, coasters such as "the Phantom's revenge" along with Racer and Jack Rabbit offer fun and excitement. There are other thrill rides my personal favorite being the Black widow which is a pendulum style ride where about 50 people sit in a rotating circle as it sways back and forth to extremely high levels! Kennywood does offer a VIP pass if you wish to purchase it to avoid the lines for coasters only. During weekdays the lines for these rides are not as bad so you can plan your day accordingly. They have an area called "Lost Kennywood" to reflect an era from our grandparent's generation. The park was founded in 1898. Kiddieland is available to small children wanting to ride a miniature version of some of the big named rides. You can see some of it from the train ride. Water rides like the "Pittsburgh plunge" cool you off on an excessive hot day but I see they have now installed pay for drying stations if you don't want to walk around totally soaked. They are in the process of opening a 4D theater within the week called "the Ice age". All I could see was that it does require 3D glasses. Food, ice cream, and treats are everywhere. There are two indoor restaurants-the Parkside cafeteria and Johnny Rockets (will be reviewed separately). Handicapped access is also available at most of the rides as well as lockers. Please note you can "stow" your gear before boarding certain rides but you do so at your own risk.. They also have daily shows along with plenty of park benches to rest. If you look around you can find more of Kennywood's history such as the historic windmill. Landmark signs point them out. More information about the park can be found on their website. Finally they will offer rain checks in the event of inclement weather under certain guidelines. Kennywood is a timeless tradition for Pittsburgh and I hope to visit again.
