| - I love anything dark and scrappy. I also love some finely crafted cocktails. Hence, I loved Velveteen Rabbit.
The only sign outside is a tiny neon rabbit, so be on the lookout. This could easily be mistaken as a hipster-y pretentious move on their part, but once you're inside, you'll see that anything more would have been too much. Oh, and the little bit of neon is a lovely nod to the city.
The interior is dark and cozy, with vintage sofas and chairs all around. There's also some really cool artwork and fun light shows on the walls. We chose to sit at the bar and play 25-cent video blackjack.
The bartenders were friendly enough, but coming from the heart of the Midwest, I expected a bit more kindness. And I know DTLV can bring it -- I had some of the sweetest, most genuine service here. They sure could make drinks, though. We watched with wide-eyes and they expertly created our boozy concoctions for several minutes, making sure everything was perfect. And they were. The drinks were absolutely outstanding.
If you've been blinded by the lights on the Strip for too long, a stop at Velveteen Rabbit is a must-do. But do yourself a favor and don't listen to anyone who tells you this place is near Fremont East -- it's in the Arts District. This can be 1.5 mile mistake, and no taxis will take you such a short distance, even though your feet feel like they're going to fall off from walking all day and you promise to tip the driver big.
