| - The Ohio Theater is part of a larger complex called Playhouse Square. My brother Paul and I just saw "Spinal Tap: Unplugged and Unwigged" here. We did a roadtrip up from Pittsburgh to see the show and we stayed overnight at the nearby Embassy Suites.
Anyway, the Ohio was the perfect size to see an acoustic show such as this. If you know your Spinal Tap history, when they were a heavy metal band, they would play large indoor arenas, but of course as time went by, they played smaller and smaller venues. When asked if their popularity was waning, their manager Ian Faith said "Their audience has become more selective." And just as back in the 1990s when aging artists would appear on "MTV Unplugged", so too did Spinal Tap decide to do an acoustic tour.
The show itself was quite an unusual take on Spinal Tap's catalogue. Imagine if you will, acoustic versions of "Hell Hole" and "Big Bottom". What made the evening really remarkable was that, not only are the three "surviving" members of Spinal Tap fantastic actors (Michael McKeon/David St. Hubbins, Harry Shearer/Derek Smalls, and Christopher Guest/Nigel Tufnel), they are also very talented musicians. At one point, Guest played a didgeridoo (and yes, I had to look that up). They also did songs from "A Mighty Wind" including "Old Joe's Place" and "A Celtic Wind".
It's too bad my husband Rick doesn't "get" the concept of Spinal Tap. But hey, my brother and I had a good time together. He enjoys Spinal Tap as much as I do. This was a terrific show and if they do a part 2, I'll gladly go see them again.
All-in-all, on a scale of one to ten, I'd say this show was an eleven! It was one more!
