| - Incredible! Stupendous! Filling! And then there's the Margaritas.
My friend, Kenner Bob, from up Iowa way, was in town for her annual visit to Aridzona and it's my most excellent pleasure to choose the joint for us to brunch and have a smart cocktail, or two ("Let's all have a little drinkey!").
I'd spotted La Santisima via Yelp about three months ago and knew immediately I wanted to try it. I'm so glad I waited for Kenner Bob's visit as it turned out to be the perfect place.
We started our culinary journey with the joint's Guacamole. Admittedly, I'm not one for bastardized guac, but this guac was da bomb. Chunky with diced mango, dried cranberries and the usual salt, pepper and garlic. Every bite equated nuclear yummy noises from both of us.
Kenner Bob chose two tacos (all street sized) from the Mix-n-Match menu: Mahi-Mahi, Chicken Tinga (I think) and one from the Specialty section: a beef brisket number that was sublime.
I chose the Tiger Shrimp, Chicken Tinga and a Pork taco that escapes my memory. I loved the Pork number.
Sides for both of us were the included rice and beans. The rice was buttery and tasted like cream was involved in its making. Scrumdiddleyumptious, it was. I'm a rice fanatic so I could've eaten 20 or six tubfulls.
Trust me when I say it would take at least 20 visits to this joint to work one's way through the menu. Kenner Bob and I took 20 minutes -- whist eating the chips, salsa and guac -- to decide on what to order. Everything -- and I mean EVERYthing -- sounded delicious. We could've read every choice's description but we finally had to "shoot the engineer" and place our order. The waitrons are incredibly patient and understanding of dyed-in-the-wool foodies trying to decide which goodies to order.
The added drawing ticket to this joint are the Margaritas. There are about 10 choices. Kenner Bob ordered the Award Winning Margarita and after one sip she said, "I'd vote for it!" For Kenner Bob it was the perfect Marg: sour but not overly so; sweet but not treacly.
My Marg was incredible. To save my life I can't remember the name of it but it contained an herbal liqueur. Truly, if this danged ol' cocktail doesn't cure you then you weren't sick.
If you're seeking true Mexican cuisine in a super casual restaurant -- and killer-diller Margaritas -- corer rĂ¡pidiamente to La Santisima.
