| - Chris Rock once said that drug dealers don't sell drugs, they offer drugs. Sewickley BMW must take the same approach to cars. They don't sell cars, they offer them. I stopped by the first time without making an appointment and was interested in Audis and BMWs as we just moved here and needed a second car.
The first sales guy was not interested in helping us as we wanted to look at new cars and he only did certified pre-owned. He passed us off to another Audi guy that seemed even less interested and did not know much about Audis. I asked him about the horsepower on the new S6 on the showroom floor (that they had just sold) and he replied that he did not know, but it was probably a lot. Very helpful. At least he did give me the keys to an S4 and a bottle of water.
We told our salesman we were going to go look at BMWs (across the lane, same owner) and he said "ok". When we got to the BMW side they had to call him back to help us as I guess we were on his hook and he can offer both Audi and BMW. Since he did not know much about BMWs or Audis, I made an appointment with a saleswoman on the BMW side for the next weekend.
She was more helpful and moderately more interested in selling us a car. I should have known better though when we were talking about cars and she bragged about driving a big pickup truck. Nothing wrong with big pickup trucks, but I want to buy my steaks from a butcher with an apron on, and my BMWs from someone who at least drives one.
Frustrated and wanting to comparison price shop, I made the journey down to Rahal BMW in the South Hills and I am glad I did for several reasons. Since I had already done some research, they looked at the inventory at Sewickley BMW and asked if I had thought about summer vs. all-season tires. They said the specific model I wanted at Sewickley had summer tires on it per the BMW computer system. The Sewickley sales people had not even mentioned tires. When looking at all-wheel drive cars in Pittisburgh I naively assumed that they would come with appropriate rubber. My mistake.
To confirm, I emailed my sales rep (#3 for those keeping track) at Sewickley BMW and she said the car did have all seaon tires on it. My skeptical salesperson at Rahal BMW (getting confused yet?) did not believe her and stopped by on his way home to check. I did as well, as the model clearly had summer tires on it after a quick search on tirerack.com. That would have been a disaster in the first snow with my wife and new baby potentially in the car.
After my last email to Sewickley asking about the specific tires on the car, they never even followed up to see if I was interested or had other questions. Like I said, they don't sell cars, they offer them. Needless to say I purchased my BMW at Rahal and love it. They went above and beyond to find the exact combination I wanted and had it trucked in from Philadelphia. I drive by Sewickley BMW on my way to work every day, and I am glad I did not buy a car there. I may be back, but only to test drive a Porsche (with no questions asked I am sure).
